Nabokov didn’t even fold his own umbrella. “Women almost never become art monsters,” we’re informed, “because art monsters only concern themselves with art, never mundane things. What Offill lays most bare is the stripping of selfhood that marriage and motherhood entail, and the suffering this inflicts on a woman who wanted to be an “art monster”.

5/13/2023 0 Comments Top marks for murder bookI was glad to see the girls back at school after their sojourn in Hong Kong in book six and their spell at the theatre in book seven (always enjoy a good girls' school story) and the young person I bought this book for was intrigued from beginning to end. Yet another wonderful Hazel and Daisy murder mystery (this is the eighth in the series) where, as usual, we see the two girls complementing each other well, with Daisy being the more daring and intuitive of the duo and Hazel being the more cautious and practical however, this story (like its two predecessors) continues to show Hazel becoming more confident in herself, and we also see the other members of the Secret Detective Society taking more of a role in the story. It is the end of the summer term and parents and trustees of the school are arriving in their dozens for the end of term festivities - who were the couple in the woods? Were they parents? Were they trustees of the school? And if there was a murder, where is the body? Hazel and Daisy are convinced there has been a foul deed committed, but how can they prove it to the police? And when another murder takes place at the school, the two girls and their fellow Detective Society members, are determined to solve the case - even if it means putting their own lives in danger. Amateur detectives Hazel Wong and Daisy Wells are back at Deepdean School for this murder mystery story, where we find one of the newer members of the Secret Detective Society witnessing what she thinks is a man strangling a woman in the woods in the school grounds. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Power of the dog winslowThe plot is essentially simple: how the US government and some of its quasi-autonomous agencies (CIA, FBI, DEA) all for their own reasons encouraged, sponsored and actively financed and helped the development of the drug cartels and their trade in Mexico. Don Winslow's masterpiece is not only a page-turning thriller but also a rich and compelling novel about a very mixed group of characters, each in his or her own way seeking some sort of salvation or redemption. 5/13/2023 0 Comments The fog book stephen kingAlthough humanoid in shape, they are extremely deformed, with an emaciated appearance enormous, inch-long teeth that force their mouths open and large amounts of tumors, body hair, and other physical defects. Type One vampires are "lesser demons", the last remnants of the Prim (magical beings who predated creation and dissolved when Gan made the multiverse). Once invited, they seem to be able to come and go as they please, even if their invitation is verbally revoked. Most also seem to require being "invited" into a particular area or building by the proper "owner" of the territory. Due to this, in King's multiverse vampires were instrumental in causing the AIDS pandemic in the 1980s. While they are immune to blood-borne diseases, they can pass them on to their victims. These standard vampires exist in at least three facets of King's multiverse: All-World the fictional setting of 'Salem's Lot and works related to it and the "real" world.Īll three types of vampires drink blood to survive. The majority of vampires that exist in King's multiverse consist of a standard type. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Lincoln in the bardo book reviewAnd it’s hard to blame them, since conceding their deaths seems to lead to a heaven or hell as envisioned by Saunders by way of Hieronymus Bosch (“a beast, bloody-handed and long-fanged, wearing a sulfur-colored robe … three women and a bent-backed old man, bearing long ropes of (their own) intestines”). They cannot even say “corpse” (which becomes “sick-form”) or “coffin” (“sick-box”). The ghosts hover here apparently because they aren’t ready to accept their passing. Other than Lincoln himself, a night watchman and a neighbor, all of these characters are dead - but that doesn’t stop them from having a lot to say. “Lincoln in the Bardo” takes place in Oak Hill Cemetery, the Georgetown graveyard where Abraham Lincoln’s young son Willie was buried in 1862. In just such a liminal state we find the characters of this first novel by celebrated short story writer George Saunders. In Tibetan Buddhism, bardo is a transitional state between one life and the next. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Summerlong by Peter S. BeagleJust as I instinctively liked Joanna and Abe, I found myself not trusting the mysterious Lioness she was just too manipulative for me, her sweetness and tragedy seeming too contrived. Until it wasn’t, which is what led to my disappointment. It was a relationship to make a reader smile and nod. Their relationship was so comfortable and genuine, that perfect mix of trust and intimacy…seeming to be what couples should aspire to. My favorite was the gritty and fiercely independent Joanna, followed closely by her gentleman friend of many years, Abe. They are neither all good, nor all bad, making them relatable and realistic. I was entranced by the characters in Summerlong, all of whom are complicated and well drawn. Beagle definitely delivered, but in one major way, I was left bitterly disappointed. Beagle’s newest book prior to its release! I sat down to read with very high expectations, and Mr. So, you can imagine my delight when I was given the chance to read Mr. I liked it then because it had unicorns and magic, and I liked it when I got older because of the underlying theme of liking yourself as you are, and not getting trapped by vanity and a quest for beauty. One of the first movies I can remember being enamored with as a little girl is The Last Unicorn, which was based on the book by Peter S. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Son of a Witch by Gregory MaguireIt's something I find rather amusing, considering Liir's struggle throughout the entirety of the book: to find his own voice as he is asked over and over again both by his own desires and by the needs of others to take Elphaba's place. And a sequel can be more than just the continuation of its predecessor's story. īut here's the thing: a book is more than the sum of it's parts. The story is badly paced (most of the 'action' happens in the last third), the reader spends most of the time being confused as to what's going on (while it is a third person narrative, it is limited third person), some of the characters seemed half-drawn, the narrative is very disconnected (occasionally, emotionless), it completely lacked an ending (.I won't spoil things, but it's left very open ended), and most importantly, that it is nothing like. To those who hated it, I say this: I see what your problems are. You will notice, however, that I gave this book five stars. I've read a lot of reviews for this book and most people seemed to hate it. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Al franken new bookHe was first elected in 2008 and re-elected in 2014.Īl Franken, Giant of the Senate, by Al Franken is the story of an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that.
